Further Reflextions on Lomi Lomi

A perfect massage for de-stressing.

A perfect massage for de-stressing.

As mentioned in the previous post, Lomi Lomi is one of my favorite massages. But interestingly enough, I’ve had a challenging time introducing this to my clients. I get the feeling that when people find something they like in a massage, or massage practitioner, many hesitate to tamper with “what’s not broken.”

Especially for people who enjoy a lighter to medium-firm massage, Lomi Lomi is perfect for inducing a little extra relaxation. One of my regular clients professes that Lomi Lomi gives him a sense of relaxation that continues through the following day - something the a normal Swedish or deep tissue massage never really did.

So what exactly is the difference between Lomi Lomi and Swedish or deep tissue massage? Characteristic Lomi strokes are fluid, long and rhythmical similar to the ebb and flow of ocean waves lapping onto shore. Draping is a little bit more liberal than Swedish to facilitate the long strokes from head to toe and back. This isn’t a massage for someone interested in deep, therapeutic work that is very muscle specific. However, this massage can still be considered highly therapeutic for its circulatory and detoxifying effects. It is a massage that calms very active brain activity, consequently a superb massage for those really needing to de-stress. One lovely young lady recently suggested that this massage would be also be perfect for seniors who’s muscle tissue may be more sensitive to heavy pressure. Yes! Absolutely!

It’s definitely in the luxurious category like Ashiatsu…just on the different end of the pressure spectrum.
